KISORO UGANDA: The Kisoro District Environment Office has warned residents to prepare for increased heavy rainfall, floods, landslides and lightning, with the weather conditions expected to continue through 2027.
The warning was issued on Thursday by Kisoro District Environment Officer Unice Akankwasa, who said meteorological reports indicate that the district could experience unusual rainfall patterns compared to those recorded over the past 150 years.
Akankwasa said the expected heavy rains follow a prolonged dry spell that has resulted in crop losses in several gardens and water shortages in some communities. She warned that the heavy rainfall could be accompanied by lightning, floods and landslides, which could destroy crops, property and infrastructure and potentially lead to loss of lives.
Akankwasa cautioned residents against engaging in activities that could put their lives at risk during heavy rainfall. She advised residents to avoid moving during heavy rains, cultivating in their gardens while it is raining, washing or cleaning utensils outside, and seeking shelter under trees.
She further advised residents to switch off televisions and phones during thunderstorms and to close doors and windows to reduce the risk of lightning-related incidents.
