Kibale county MP Abigaba Re-elected Kamwenge District Roads Committee Chairperson

KAMWENGE UGANDA: Kibale County MP, Eng. Cuthbert Abigaba Mirembe, has been re-elected chairperson of the Kamwenge District Roads Committee for a third term.

He was re-elected on Thursday, October 8, 2026, during the committee’s inaugural meeting in Kampala.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Mirembe thanked members for trusting him with the responsibility since 2016.

Following the election, Mirembe unveiled the committee’s five-year work plan on behalf of its members.

The plan prioritises opening new roads, maintaining existing ones and constructing bridges. The district targets 150 kilometres of road works in the 2026/2027 financial year, fewer than in previous years due to inflation.

Mirembe said the Ministry of Works and Transport had allocated 200 million shillings to Kamwenge Town Council to tarmac about one kilometre of road around Karitusi.

The ministry also plans to use low-cost tarmac technology on the Nsorora–Kamwenge Railway Station–Ganyenda road and the Bigodi–Busiriba–Bunoga road.

The ministry further plans to construct three permanent bridges: Bunoga Bridge, connecting Busiriba Sub-county to Kyenjojo District; Buhumuriro-Twariire Bridge, linking Kabambiro and Kabuga Town Council; and Kiburara Bridge, connecting Kabambiro to Ibanda District.

Ministry technical teams are conducting geotechnical studies at the proposed sites ahead of construction.

Mirembe expressed hope that Kamwenge would benefit from the second phases of the Development Response to Displacement Impacts Project (DRDIP II), the Uganda Cities and Municipalities Infrastructure Development programme (UCMID II) and the Climate-Smart Agriculture programme, which are expected to support road works in the district.

He also thanked Agriculture Minister Frank Tumwebaze for lobbying for Climate-Smart Agriculture to benefit Kamwenge.

The District Roads Committee comprises all MPs representing Kamwenge District, the LCV chairperson, Chief Administrative Officer, district engineer and district secretary responsible for works.

The offices of the Resident District Commissioner and District Internal Security Officer have also been co-opted as special members.
