KISORO UGANDA: A team from the Inspectorate of Government (IGG) Kabale Regional Office has conducted an impromptu spot check at Busanza Health Centre IV in Kisoro District following a tip-off alleging absenteeism among health workers.
The team, led by Noeline Nsungwa, found that the health workers were present and carrying out their duties, with only one reportedly away on study leave.
The IGG team, however, raised concerns about the facility’s infrastructure, saying the health centre has not been adequately expanded since it was upgraded to a Health Centre IV, despite receiving an increased number of patients.
During the Wednesday inspection, the team examined the newly constructed theatre and observed rainwater leaking into the building. According to Nsungwa, the leakage raises concerns about the quality of the construction work and possible defects in the building’s drainage or plumbing systems.
Nsungwa said the team would prepare a report on the leaking theatre and submit it to the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and the Chief Administrative Officer of Kisoro District for further action. The authorities will also be expected to notify the contractor responsible for the construction.
The inspection also found that the health centre has an adequate supply of medicines, although Nsungwa said the drug store is too small to properly accommodate the stock. She called for government intervention to improve medicine storage facilities.
The team further noted that the maternity ward has an inadequate number of beds despite the high number of patients served by the facility.
Nsungwa also expressed concern about poor lighting at the health centre, saying the facility does not have solar power and is affected by frequent electricity outages.
She advised health workers to continue recording patient information manually in books whenever power goes off and later transfer the records into the computer system once electricity is restored.
