This year’s Independence Day celebrations will be held virtually at State House Entebbe, with only 30 dignitaries and a few religious leaders expected to attend physically. Other participants will join the celebrations online.

The celebrations will be held under the theme, “Embracing Our Sovereignty with Hope and Visionary Leadership.”ICT and National Guidance Minister Justine Lumumba Kasule said the virtual arrangement is expected to save the government at least three billion shillings that would otherwise have been spent on organising the national celebrations.

The veterans say their contribution to the liberation struggle since 1986 laid a foundation for Uganda’s social, economic and political transformation.

Retired Lieutenant Colonel Tadeo Hatega Haguma has called on the younger generation taking up leadership positions to serve according to the law and strive to leave a positive legacy for future generations.

Hatega has also appealed to the government to consider increasing the salaries and benefits of retired soldiers. He says veterans remain a reserve force that can still be called upon to defend the country when necessary.

Meanwhile, retired Captain Nzita Charles Sebikari has expressed concern that some newly recruited officers neglect veterans who participated in the bush war.

Sebikari has urged the government to continue integrating and supporting veterans, saying their contribution played a role in establishing peace and stability in Uganda.

The veterans say continued recognition and support would demonstrate appreciation for those who participated in the country’s liberation struggle.
