Kisoro Municipality has recorded the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence in Kisoro District at five percent, while Morora Sub-county has registered the lowest prevalence at zero-point-two percent.
Failure to use condoms has been identified as one of the major factors contributing to the spread of HIV. The figures have been provided by the Kisoro District HIV/AIDS Focal Person, Dr. Sison Mugisha.
In an exclusive interview with The Lens on Tuesday, Dr. Mugisha said the statistics highlight the need for residents to take HIV prevention measures seriously and avoid risky sexual behaviours that could increase the spread of the virus.
Dr. Mugisha urged members of the public to avoid unprotected sexual intercourse with partners whose HIV status is unknown. He also encouraged sexually active people to use condoms correctly and consistently as one of the measures to reduce the risk of HIV infection.
Dr. Mugisha further called upon residents to regularly test for HIV and know their status. He said people who test positive can access treatment and care early, while those who test negative can take appropriate measures to prevent infection.
The district HIV/AIDS focal person emphasized that preventing new HIV infections requires individual responsibility and collective efforts involving communities, health workers, and local leaders.
